artoberVA 2020 is here at last! We are excited to bring you the fifth annual artoberVA virtually and in person (from a social distance) this year as we celebrate arts and culture in the Richmond and Tri-Cities region. Despite all of the challenges this year presents, arts and culture live on! Wherever you DIG IN, whether it’s from your living room, kitchen, or backyard, we encourage you to be safe and responsible this month.

Here’s glimpse into what we have to look forward to during these first few weeks of artoberVA.

artoberVA Kick-Off with Quirk Hotel!

Join us TONIGHT, October 1 at 5 PM, for a virtual happy hour with Quirk Hotel to kick off this year’s artoberVA! Quirk Hotel is offering a special artoberVA cocktail and CultureWorks will receive a portion of the proceeds from purchases. You can pick up a to-go kit, which includes 1-4 cocktails and a light snack, or get the artoberVA Spritz in person all month long! Click here for more information about the kick-off!

Prabir’s Picks!

Our first set of Celeb Picks comes from Prabir Mehta. Prabir is a musician (Prabir Trio/Full Moon Fever), arts advocate (Gallery5, Mozart Fest), and science communicator (Science Museum of Virginia / VPM). Prabir says, “Arts are how we interpret the world. Those interpretations can have vast impacts on the trajectory of how we grow as a species. From ancient cave walls to ritzy modern museums, Art is and has always been a way to exchange ideas, interpret culture, and inspire new thought.” We couldn’t agree more! Check out Prabir’s picks for events and experiences you can enjoy during this first week of artoberVA:

  • Gallery5 – You can enjoy Gallery5 exhibits from the comfort of your home! Beginning on October 3, explore the Carnival of 5 Fires virtual art show.

  • 2nd Street Festival – This celebration of the Jackson Ward community will commemorate it’s 32nd anniversary with online new musical performances, favorite artists from past festivals, cooking demonstrations, fun family activities, and so much more!

  • ArtistPROOF: Studio Two Three's AUCTION! – This is Studio Two Three’s 8th annual auction and first auction online! From October 2-10, you can bid for artwork by Morgan Ashcom, Natalie Baxter, Sally Bowring, Hamilton Glass, Christopher Gregson, and more.

Participate in the #ArtsHuntRVA!

Richmond Performing Arts Alliance (RPAA) and CultureWorks have partnered to present #ArtsHuntRVA, an interactive, free, family-friendly scavenger hunt that launches on Thursday, October 1st! Download a list of locations, go visit them, scan a QR code and watch a short video, then post a picture to social media. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month. You can also download the artoberVA Checklist for ways that you can dig in all month long!

Get your artoberVA t-shirt!

Bonfire and CultureWorks are collaborating to offer limited edition artoberVA t-shirts designed by Ajah Courts in partnership with Studio Two Three, available until October 5th! This unique design highlights notable arts and culture across Richmond. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will benefit CultureWorks.

Check out the artoberVA calendar!

You might want to do something in person or online, your interests might vary from art to music, or maybe you’re looking for a date idea or a family activity. Whatever it is, explore our Arts & Culture Calendar to find the experience that’s right for you! If you or your organization is hosting an arts and culture experience during October, you can submit your event to be a part of the artoberVA calendar.

Try going for a Creative Sprint!

Stretch your creativity muscles this year and participate in the October Creative Sprint from Another Limited Rebellion. Sign up to receive daily prompts that force you to let go of perfectionism in favor of trying something new and seeing what happens.

We are encouraged by this month ahead of us and look forward to celebrating artoberVA with you!
