5th Wall Theatre presents H*tler's Tasters

5th Wall Theatre presents H*tler's Tasters

Three times a day, every day, a group of young women have the opportunity to die for their country. They are Adolf Hitler’s food tasters. H*tler’s Tasters is a fictional retelling of a largely unknown story of the young German women conscripted to taste Adolf Hitler’s food for poison. This dark comedy explores the way girls navigate sexuality, friendship, patriotism, and poison during the Third Reich. Using an anachronistic retelling of a historical footnote, H*tler’s Tasters considers what girls discuss as they wait to see if they will survive another meal.

Butterfly Project at Virginia Holocaust Museum

Join the Virginia Holocaust Museum for a behind-the-scenes archives tour and participate in The Butterfly Project!

The Butterfly Project is a call to action through education, the arts and memorial-making. By painting ceramic butterflies, which are displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, participants remember the 1.5 million children killed during the Holocaust.

After learning about artifacts from our collections, each participant will learn about a child who perished during the Holocaust and paint a ceramic butterfly in their memory. All butterflies painted will then be fired on behalf of the Museum and eventually used for a display here at VHM!

We recommend this event for adults and students 6th grade and up. While this event is open to the public, space is limited.

Our mission is to preserve stories that inspire. For many of us Black history is reduced to a handful of moments and events. We remember the courageous and popular stories of Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, but there are many, many more. Although Virginia’s past is sometimes painful, we can learn from our ancestors and allow that history to fuel our future.

Richmond Shakespeare presents Lord of the Flies

  • Dominion Energy Center’s Gottwald Playhouse (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Evacuated from a war-torn world and marooned on a tropical island when their airplane crashes, a group of pre-adolescent boys find themselves battling for survival with no adults to help them. At first, the fair-minded and mild-mannered Ralph seems a natural leader, but as vestiges of civilization fall away, the more aggressive Jack takes control. Jack organizes the boys into a tribe of hunters, searching for pigs to kill and eat and, more alarmingly, watching for the Beast - a malevolent force that the boys believe is stalking the island.

Gradually the frightened youngsters slip from civilized behavior into red-blooded savagery. They battle with inner demons and external fears, with the weakest and most vulnerable at the highest risk. Ultimately, driven by a primitive bloodlust, childish “games” lead to tragic consequences and Golding’s timeless fable exposes the Beast that is in us all and debunks the myth of childhood innocence.

Special Exhibitions of American, borns Hungary and A Long Arc at the VMFA

Special Exhibitions of American, borns Hungary and A Long Arc at the VMFA

American, born Hungary follows a remarkable number of émigrés and exiles from Hungary to Berlin and Paris and then on to New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, where they reinvented themselves and American photography. This exhibition is the first full examination of their circuitous journeys to the United States—in the aftermaths of two world wars and Hungary’s student-led revolt in 1956—and the wondrous artistic legacy that developed along the way.

A Long Arc explores the American South’s distinct, evolving, and contradictory character through an examination of photography and how photographers working in the region have reckoned with the South’s fraught history and posed urgent questions about American identity. Organized chronologically, the exhibition traces the South’s shifting identity in more than two hundred photographs made over more than 175 years.

CAT Theatre presents Painting Churches

“Painting Churches” finds Gardner and Fanny Church preparing to move out of their Beacon Hill house to their summer cottage on Cape Cod. Gardner, once a famous poet, now is retired. He slips in and out of senility as his wife Fanny valiantly tries to keep them both afloat. They have asked their daughter, Mags, to come home and help them move. Mags agrees, for she hopes as well to finally paint their portrait. She is now on the verge of artistic celebrity herself and hopes, by painting her parents, to come to terms with them and they with her. Mags triumphs in the end as Fanny and Gardner actually step through the frame and become a work of art ineffable and timeless.
