Prosperity 6 Study
The Richmond and Tri-Cities' nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $329.9 million in economic impact.

In October, 2023, Americans for the Arts unveiled the results of the most comprehensive economic and social impact study (AEP6) of the nation’s nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted, building on its 30-year legacy as the largest and most inclusive study of its kind.

In our region, the sector generated $329.9 million in economic activity during 2022—$213.2 million in spending by arts and culture organizations and an additional $116.7 million in event-related expenditures by their audiences. That economic activity supported 6,742 jobs, provided $266.6 million in personal income to residents, and generated $82.7 million in tax revenue.

The Local Study
From May 2022 through June 2023, CultureWorks partnered with local arts and culture organizations to collect nearly 2,500 audience-intercept surveys and collected detailed financial data from 93 local nonprofit arts and culture organizations, such as theater and dance companies, museums, visual arts, and arts education organizations.
Local AEP6 activities were supported by E. Rhodes and Leona B.Carpenter Foundation, ChamberRVA, Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, Dominion Energy, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
