Preserving the Mystery: How the Poe Museum Keeps Richmond’s Dark Poet Alive
Tucked away in the heart of Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom, the Poe Museum offers more than a tribute to one of America’s most iconic literary figures; it’s a portal into the life, legacy, and lingering mystery of Edgar Allan Poe.
Far beyond the spooky stereotypes, the museum sheds light on Poe’s deep roots in Richmond, his contributions to American literature, and his enduring influence on writers and artists across generations. With original manuscripts, personal belongings, and one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Poe artifacts, the museum is a must-visit for curious minds and literature lovers alike.
In this spotlight, we explore how the Poe Museum preserves the past while keeping Poe’s work alive for today’s audiences, and how it continues to inspire wonder, reflection, and creative curiosity in Richmond and beyond. We spoke with their Community Engagement Manager Nicole Coppino to learn more.

CultureWorks: How does the museum strike a balance between preserving historical authenticity and making things accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences?
Nicole: The museum strikes a balance between preserving historical authenticity and making things accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences by holding space for the past, present, and future simultaneously. Our dedicated staff members prioritize the preservation of historical objects and stories, but also value the impact of fun and engaging programming and events for our modern audiences.
CultureWorks: Poe was not only a literary figure, but also a cultural one. How do you see his influence living on in today’s art and culture?
Nicole: The impact that Poe has on today's art and cultural spheres is hard to overstate. The author of the first modern detective story, Poe created the blueprint for all modern true crime media. Of course, he also shaped the genre of horror as we know it today, as you can see from the countless allusions to his work in modern horror movies, books, and TV shows.
CultureWorks: Are there any upcoming exhibits or initiatives you’re especially excited about?
Nicole: The Poe Museum is excited to announce the redesign of our North Building exhibit space, the contents of which focus on the mysterious nature of Poe's death. This final upgrade completes a comprehensive redesign of all the museum's exhibit spaces that began earlier this year.
CultureWorks: How can people support or get involved with the museum’s mission, whether as visitors, volunteers, or donors?
Nicole: Community members can support the museum by donating, volunteering, or visiting, whether on a regular museum day or during a special event. To learn more or get involved, please visit www.poemuseum.org or email nicole@poemuseum.org.
