We spoke with their Community Engagement Manager Nicole Coppino to learn more.

CultureWorks: For those who may not be familiar, how would you describe the Poe Museum and its mission in Richmond’s cultural landscape?

Nicole: The Poe Museum is a literary museum in the historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia, focused on the mission of illuminating Edgar Allan Poe for everyone, evermore.

CultureWorks: What makes Richmond such a significant place in the life and legacy of Edgar Allan Poe?

Nicole: Richmond is the city where Poe grew up; he considered himself a "Virginian at heart."

CultureWorks: The museum hosts a wide range of events, from literary talks to UnHappy Hours. How do these programs expand the idea of what a literary museum can be?

Nicole: The Poe Museum's wide range of events expands the idea of what a literary museum can be by inviting diverse audiences to engage with the museum and its mission.

CultureWorks: How does the museum strike a balance between preserving historical authenticity and making things accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences?

Nicole: The museum strikes a balance between preserving historical authenticity and making things accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences by holding space for the past, present, and future simultaneously. Our dedicated staff members prioritize the preservation of historical objects and stories, but also value the impact of fun and engaging programming and events for our modern audiences.

CultureWorks: Poe was not only a literary figure, but also a cultural one. How do you see his influence living on in today’s art and culture?

Nicole: The impact that Poe has on today's art and cultural spheres is hard to overstate. The author of the first modern detective story, Poe created the blueprint for all modern true crime media. Of course, he also shaped the genre of horror as we know it today, as you can see from the countless allusions to his work in modern horror movies, books, and TV shows.

CultureWorks: Are there any upcoming exhibits or initiatives you’re especially excited about?

Nicole: The Poe Museum is excited to announce the redesign of our North Building exhibit space, the contents of which focus on the mysterious nature of Poe's death. This final upgrade completes a comprehensive redesign of all the museum's exhibit spaces that began earlier this year.
