Staff Spotlight: Calie Bain, Community Engagement Strategist

Since joining CultureWorks in 2024, Calie Bain has brought her passion for accessible, transformative art to the Richmond and Tri-Cities region. With a multifaceted background as an actor, arts activist, and educator, she has spent her career working alongside communities of all ages, using the arts as a catalyst for dialogue, empowerment, and connection. As an ensemble member with The Conciliation Project, Calie has created thought-provoking work at the intersection of art, social justice, and advocacy, collaborating with organizations from the National Education Association to the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. Her artistry has also been recognized by the Richmond Theatre Community Circle. In this spotlight, we’re excited to share how Calie is helping to ensure a thriving, sustainable, and inclusive arts landscape for all.

CultureWorks: What is your role at CultureWorks, and what does a typical day look like for you?

Calie: My title is Community Engagement Strategist and I am responsible for designing and facilitating all of CultureWorks' non-grant programming, which right now includes networking and educational opportunities, bringing art programming to under-resourced communities, the Resource Roundup, and of course, artoberVA! A typical day probably may include connecting with an artist or arts leader over coffee, planning CultureWorks' next event, or dreaming up a new program or idea.

CultureWorks: What drew you to this position and to working in the arts and cultural sector?

Calie: My role is a marriage of so many of my passions—I am a theatre artist, but I also love working and talking with people and problem-solving. And above all else, I just love Richmond, and I really, really believe that our arts scene is one of one.

CultureWorks: How do you see art and culture making an impact in our region right now?

Calie: Whenever I go out and attend a gallery opening or see a show, I feel the most connected to myself and my neighbors. The arts are a salve, and there are so many incredible venues and organizations that are going out of their way to carve out space for people to be in community.

CultureWorks: If you could take the whole team to one local cultural event or spot, where would you choose and why?

Calie: I love Friday Cheers—hanging out on a picnic blanket, enjoying the weather, and hearing a new artist each week is the best! The War and Treaty and Chaparelle were among my favorites from this past season.

CultureWorks: If you could learn any new creative skill, what would it be?

Calie: I feel like I have been (unsuccessfully) trying to get into knitting or crochet since I was eight. One day!

CultureWorks: What are you excited about in the months ahead—for your work, your community, or your own creative life?

Calie: There's so much going on to be excited about! Without thinking too hard, I'm a Church Hill resident and always enjoy the annual community Candlelight Walk in December. I also can't wait for Virago Alley to produce Richmond's first Renaissance Faire at Dorey Park in April!
