Alexis Courtney & Emily Wicks of Hand / Thrown
For Alexis Courtney and Emily Wicks a $2,000 Building Capabilities grant, through the 2018 cycle, was integral to establishing their new shared studio space - Hand /Thrown - by providing funding specifically for a kiln and associated materials.
The kiln expanded production of their fine art and functional work, and provided autonomy over their making. Having necessary physical resources to create work provided clarity for Alexis and Emily, positively influencing their creative environment and their ability to have a seamless and focused studio process.
Alexis Courtney has been exploring clay for 11 years while also working as a professional photographer. She focuses on functional wares and has recently completed commissions for Sugar & Twine, Perch, Lucid Living and Accoutre. Emily Wicks has been working in ceramics for 10 years, she studied at VCUarts concentrating in Ceramics and Textiles and currently teaches youth and adult wheel throwing and handbuilding.
Hand / Thrown, their studio dedicated to ceramic arts in Richmond's Northside, is committed to nurturing a community that welcomes both experienced and beginner ceramicists.
